Top Tips to Make Your Business Stand Out on Google

Are you a small business trying to increase your reach on the internet? We’ve rounded up a few tips for your Google My Business (GMB) profile to increase your visibility in a sea of options. GMB is an important tool that increases your Google ranking importance significantly, from an average of 19% to 25%. Additionally, 49% of GMB users will get over 1,000 views a month. You can read more statistics about GMB here.

Enter Complete and Accurate Information. Google provides search results based on relevance, proximity, and prominence, so it is important to make sure that the information you’ve provided is as complete and accurate as possible. For instance, if your business is closer to the user, it will rank it higher in their search results.

Describe Your Business. Write a description of your business, including keywords that people might use to find it. Google will use these keywords to tag your business, moving it further up in the results page for relevant searches. Include what the business does, a mention of the products or services you offer, and more.

Verify Your Information. When setting up your Google My Business account, you will be sent a verification card to the address listed. Amy Graves, SEO expert certified in Google Analytics notes, “The key here is to enter the verification code as soon as you get it. If you wait too long, the code will expire.” And once your account is set up, regularly check your account to make sure your listing is as up to date as possible.

Add Pictures and Videos. When someone is looking for a new product or service, a picture can speak volumes. The more visuals you have in your listing, the more your listing will stand out and get bumped up in search results. Google loves images posted from both the owner and customers. Note that the video size is limited and should be less than 30 seconds in length.

Manage and Respond to Reviews. How you communicate on GMB will demonstrate to potential clients how you run your business, so keep communication friendly and positive. Better reviews will move you up in the search results. If you do receive a negative or untrue review, Google still expects you to comment. Respond and ask to take the conversation offline to learn more about their specific situation and ways to rectify it.

Keep Your Hours Accurate. This will boost your search results and let potential clients know when they can reach you or visit your business. As businesses open up, it is important that you maintain your business’ relevance by keeping your hours up to date. This will ensure that your business maintains positive reviews as customers start to venture out again as well.

Post Often. Just 5 minutes once a week can exponentially increase your SEO. Posts on GMB expire after 7 days, so it’s important to make sure that you’re staying relevant and up to date with your business information. When a new post is created, it moves your business up in the search results, so you want to make sure you’re posting often in small bursts rather than all at once.

No matter what services or products your business offers, it is important to maintain a positive and relevant internet presence. These tips will help ensure your business stays near the top of search results. Looking for more tips and small business resources?
